What is rod knock?

Rod knock is a problem that occurs in internal combustion engines where the connecting rod that links the piston to the crankshaft becomes loose and starts to knock against the crankshaft as the engine runs. This knocking sound is usually a result of excessive wear or damage to the bearings that support the rod on the crankshaft.

Rod knock is typically caused by lack of lubrication, which can lead to increased friction and heat, ultimately causing the bearings to wear out. It can also be caused by incorrect assembly or installation of the connecting rod, or by running the engine at high speeds or under heavy loads for extended periods of time.

If left unaddressed, rod knock can lead to catastrophic engine failure as the connecting rod can eventually break and damage other components in the engine. It is important to address rod knock as soon as it is detected to prevent further damage.

Repairing rod knock typically involves removing the engine from the vehicle, disassembling it, replacing the damaged bearings or connecting rod, and reassembling the engine. In some cases, the damage may be so severe that it requires a complete engine rebuild or replacement.
